It all started with the Sussex Housing Group.
SHG is a partnership of organizations that includes representation from the public and private sector, non-profits and other community-based organizations, and communities. SHG works collaboratively on housing and community development issues as they affect communities in Sussex County, DE.
We’re a mix of long-time residents and newcomers, renters and homeowners, business owners and employees, families and individuals, citizens and immigrants, commuters, bus riders, cyclists and pedestrians. We see friends, family, and coworkers priced out of our area. We see sprawl consume acres of wilderness and increase the number of cars on the road. And we see an alternative. We want Sussex County to be an affordable and inclusive community. We can make Sussex County a place with homes for all, and where you don’t have to have a car to get around.
YIMBY's may or may not have experienced housing struggles, but some common ones are:
Struggling to find a home that
fits their budget
in the size required for the family
and is safe and healthy
Having to move and live a far distance away from work, school, or community to find housing their salary allows them to afford
Having family and friends relocate to find affordable housing
Commuting hours a day to get to work
Spending years on waitlists for income-qualified housing
Having to decide between making a rent payment, or medical appointment, or car repair
Rooflessness, couch surfing, homelessness
Becoming a YIMBY is a way to get involved with your community to
find solutions to the the systemic problems and policies
that have affected you personally.
